It's easy to forget how early it is in Spencer Schwellenbach's career. He offered a rare reminder on Tuesday evening. After allowing just one run over 20 innings through his first three starts of the season, Schwellenbach yielded six over 4 2/3 frames in the Braves' 6-3 loss to the Blue Jays at Rogers Centre. That included a pair of home runs that amounted to a five-run bottom of the fifth. See the Braves in 2025: Single game tickets on sale now!"I kind of let it get away from myself," said Schwellenbach. That's what was so curious about that one bad inning. There haven't been many since Schwellenbach's swift rise to the Majors last May, and that's mainly due to the righty's stellar command of his six-pitch repertoire. That eluded Schwellenbach, leading to an uncharacteristic snowball for a 24-year-old who pitches with the poise of a veteran."This is going to happen, that's part of this whole thing," said manager Brian Snitker. "I thought his stuff was really good, he just missed location. And when you do that to these hitters, you're going to pay for it. It happens. It happens to the best of them."The first four frames weren't perfect, but they still featured enough dominance to indicate Schwellenbach may cruise to another quality start. He was pitching to contact a bit more than usual, but that was a matter of matchup as much as anything else, as he faced a club that doesn't offer too much swing and miss to begin with.Schwellenbach pitched out of trouble in the first inning and walked off the mound with just one run allowed after surrendering a leadoff double in the third. He kept throwing strikes good strikes at that to keep the Braves in the game. It was more of the same stuff that's impressed Snitker and the club for nearly a full season.Your browser does not support HTML5 video tag. "He left some balls in the middle of the plate."The inning went as follows: Single, homer, double, wild pitch, walk, homer. Toronto had five more runs on the board by the time Schwellenbach recorded the first out. He retired a second batter before giving way to the bullpen, finishing his outing with six runs on six hits, two walks and three strikeouts Max Scherzer Jersey. That moved his ERA from 0.45 to 2.55.The deficit was a bit too steep for the Braves to overcome Addison Barger Jersey, but the at-bats remained promising. Austin Riley homered for the second straight game after an 11-pitch at-bat against Kevin Gausman in the first inning. Matt Olson drove one out, too, sending it a Statcast-projected 412 feet to center field in the sixth. Ozzie Albies launched a solo homer to right in the ninth. There was a lot to like, and it again signaled the imminent turnaround Snitker has been preaching over the past few days.Schwellenbach, meanwhile, was already thinking about the next one after the game, though his self analysis was sober."You just get back to the drawing board in the next bullpen, working on some things, fine-tuning some location stuff," said Schwellenbach. "I feel like I didn't quite have some of my offspeed pitches today, and that's what makes me good, it's having six pitches and being effective that way. So that's step one, getting back to the pitcher that I am and making sure all pitches are ready to go."Bouncing back is part of the process. Before Tuesday's game, Snitker raved about Schwellenbach's quickness to learn, and the fact that he's "maturing as a pitcher with innings," learning on the fly and acquiring experience to fall back on.So the skipper fully expects his young starter to get back to who he is."I think he gets it," said Snitker. "Talking to him after the game, I think he gets it. It's going to happen that's when we last. If he pitches long enough, that's going to happen to him again. He understands, and it'll probably just drive him a little harder over the week."This loss to Toronto matched Schwellenbach's career-worst mark in earned runs allowed. The first one came on June 5, 2024, against the Red Sox. Seven days later, he went six innings with two earned runs against the Orioles.Simply put, he acted like he'd been here before. Now, he gets another chance."It's like I told him when he came out, s long as you feel good, we're going to do it again in five days,'" said Snitker.
